The Left has discovered that John McCain has a “spiritual guide” who, they would have you believe, is every bit a radical as the unlovely Jeremiah Wright. The “guide” is Rod Parsley, and his sin is that he actually stands up for his faith in Christ.
His other sin is that he endorsed John McCain. McCain’s sin is that he stated that this Ohio preacher is a “spiritual guide.” This has surfaced, not in the mainstream media (yet; wait for it) but among the far Left (Huffington; Mother Jones; Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite) as the equivalent of Obama’s ultra-Left, ultra-political Wright.
This is the usual instinct of the Left: when one of their heroes is enmeshed in an ugly scandal, start throwing accusations of the -ism of the day: racism; religious “intolerance,” sexism, you name it. And, by all means, inflate the significance, blow it up beyond all proportion.
Such appears to be the case with Rod Parsley, who, it is claime, would have us Christians wage another Crusade against Islam. Would that we had the stones for it. Now there’s little doubt that Parsley is what we might call politically incorrect. Which does not mean he is incorrect as to the facts.
From Thistlethwaite’s diatribe in the WaPo, the accused, Parsley, stands in the dock for the following alleged sins:
In his writings, Parsley has called upon Christians to actively confront the “false religion” of Islam with the aim of destroying it. He urges his readers to realize that a confrontation between Christianity and Islam is unavoidable: “We find now we have no choice. The time has come.” He ramps up the fear: “We may already be losing the battle. As I scan the world, I find that Islam is responsible for more pain, more bloodshed, and more devastation than nearly any other force on earth at this moment.” Parsley claims that Islam is an “anti-Christ religion” predicated on “deception.” The Muslim prophet, Mohammed, he writes, “received revelations from demons and not from the true God.”
Let’s start with the basics. There is one God, who has revealed himself to us as the Trinity. The second person of that Trinity is the fully human, fully divine person of Jesus Christ, the only son of God. If one believes this to be the truth, then it must follow that another religion that claims it to be false is likewise false.
Islam, as it specifically denies that Jesus Christ is fully divine and is one with God, can fairly be called an “anti-Christ religion.” In human history, Islam has been the aggressor over the centuries since its founding almost 1400 years ago. Islam has been at war with Christendom, and had to be beaten back from Europe by force of arms.
The terror attacks of this, and the last century, are merely continuation of this warfare by other means. Islam in today’s world stands for human slavery, suppression of human rights (women and non-Muslims in Muslim lands), and terrorism. The evidence on the ground is far too much to be ignored; those who do so in the name of peace are going to have the peace that comes from being under the tyrant’s heel.
Should McCain distance himself from Parsley? No; what Parsley speaks is the truth. Will McCain distance himself? Most likely if the mainstream media picks up on the story. John McCain may be a truth-teller, but he also needs to get elected.
